WEEEEED DECK
The Birth of the Deck
WEEEEED is the first legally produced leaf-themed designer deck made in Taiwan. It reached 393% of its goal on the Taiwanese crowdfunding platform zeczec in 2022.
The brief was never to print a leaf on the back and call it done. It was to build the whole thing — box, back, faces — around one sensation: the dizzy, drifting, can’t-quite-focus feeling.
Card Box Design
The tuck case takes the form everyone already recognises: a cigarette pack. A brown, fibrous surface, a photo-real green plant, an ingredients panel and warning-label typography — right down to the warning itself. WARNING: Playing this product damages your sense of sight.
The stock is a bio-circular paper made from European-grown hemp fibre, a specialty import rarely seen on playing cards. You can see the fibre flecks in the surface.
Back Design
There is not a single leaf on the back. Instead, dense arrays of black, pink and green lines build up the impression of rolled cigarettes, packed side by side.
The high-contrast palette does the drifting and the dizziness. The interesting part: there is no brown ink anywhere in it. Hold the card at arm’s length for a few seconds and your eye mixes the lines into a deep green or brown that seems to sit above the surface.
Face Design
Pips and indices are deliberately resized and scattered so the eye never finds a place to settle. Black suits are paired with green and pink, red suits with blue and yellow, and the saturated gradients overlap like a kaleidoscope opening.
The kings and queens wear leaf-patterned clothing, eyes bloodshot, each lost in a moment of his or her own. Their expressions run in order through diamonds, spades, clubs and hearts: joy, anger, sorrow, delight.
The jokers show a king riding a unicycle across a tightrope — unsteady, unhinged, and thoroughly enjoying himself.
Handling
The cards are printed on imported German black-core stock with air-cushion embossing and a multi-layer thinning process, for a feel and a working life that plastic decks cannot match.
